I need to add additional scopes for a Shopify integration and found a community article ([Shopify - Custom GraphQL Connection - Update the Scopes?](https://connective.celigo.com/t/shopify-custom-graphql-connection-update-the-scopes/5329)) that details a custom app needs to be created and given the appropriate scopes.

It appears that Shopify has deprecated the legacy process for creating custom apps and generating an access token

Is there updated documentation to accommodate this change? How can I create a custom connection to add additional scopes?

I had to do this a few weeks ago and it was a bit confusing. Hopefully this helps.

## Shopify “private apps” are gone — here’s the new way (Custom app + install link)

Shopify replaced the old **Private App** flow with a **custom app** that you install via a **custom distribution install link**. Once installed, you’ll use the app’s **Client ID** + **Client secret** as your OAuth credentials in [integrator.io](http://integrator.io).

Video walkthrough (I recorded this end-to-end):

> **[Shopify Custom App 2026.mov](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QEAcKqHskhaw7XelpagcUZZ_UGi4acpx/view?usp=sharing)**
>
> Google Drive file.

* * *

# 1) Create the app (Shopify Dev Dashboard)

1. Go to **Shopify Dev Dashboard** → **Apps**
2. Click **Create app**
3. Choose **Start from Dev Dashboard**
4. Name it → **Create**

That’s it. Don’t worry about installing yet — you can’t install until you release a version and generate the install link.

* * *

# 2) Add scopes + the [integrator.io](http://integrator.io) redirect URL, then release a version

1. In the app, go to **Versions**

2. Open **New version** (or “Create version”)

3. Configure:

4. Click **Release** (this matters — without releasing, you can’t properly install/authorize)

**Tip:** Your scopes here should match what you enter later in your [integrator.io](http://integrator.io) connection.

* * *

# 3) Generate an install link for the store (Shopify Partners → Custom distribution)

This is the part that replaces “private app install.”

1. Open **Shopify Partners** → select your app

2. Go to **Distribution**

3. In **Custom distribution** :

4. Click **Generate link**

5. Copy the install link

* * *

# 4) Install it on the store

1. Open the install link while logged into the target store admin
2. Click **Install** / **Approve**

Now the app exists _inside that store_ and can be authorized.

* * *

# 5) Copy the OAuth credentials (Client ID + Secret)

1. Back in **Shopify Dev Dashboard** for the app

2. Go to **Settings** → **Credentials**

3. Copy:

* * *

# 6) Configure [integrator.io](http://integrator.io) (Custom OAuth) and authorize

In [integrator.io](http://integrator.io):

1. Create/update your **OAuth client (iClient)** using:

2. Create/update your **Shopify connection** (Custom OAuth):

3. Click **Save & authorize**

4. Approve access in Shopify

@tylerlamparter ,

Does this work with GraphQL? Your example looks to be working with REST only which I believe Shopify is moving away from that. I got the authentication to work using your walkthrough, but if I want to use GraphQL, I have to use the connection using the "GraphQL" export option and not the Shopify native Celigo option.

Thanks,

Paul

It should work with GraphQL as well. Are you running into an issue?

Sorry, should of provided more detail on this.

I tried that but it's greyed out.

Then tried the GraphQL directly within the connection but the Save and Authorize is greyed out.

The HTTP connection to Shopify is working, it's just when trying to use GraphQL, it doesn't allow me to use it.

That's a bug. Can you make a ticket and I can link it to the internal bug?

You can make a connection to Shopify with the generic GraphQL connector for now. If you need another endpoint to support this, reach out to your rep and they'll give you one for free to support this work around.

Got it. Added to existing ticket (280509).

Thanks Tyler!
